General Information



The Fort Sam Houston Soldier and Family Assistance Center (SFAC) is a one-stop administrative resource center hosting 16 different services supporting Warriors in Transition, their Family members and Surviving Spouses. Injured Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen are transported to Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX for treatment. Fort Sam Houston includes Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) which is one of the world's premier medical treatment centers. This Level 1 Trauma Center specializes in treatment of burns and amputations. With this world class burn center and the Center for the Intrepid, seriously Wounded Warriors receives the finest treatment and recuperation programs. The SFAC provides these Warriors and their Family members extensive assistance on their road back to duty or in their transition back to their civilian community.

Services Include but are not limited to:

Information, Referral and Follow-Up (IR&F)

Provide reception services and a general orientation on the services available. Conduct initial intake and make referrals, and maintain resource listings on services provided in local community.

Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS)

Provides all registration services for Child, Youth & School Services programs including Sports and Family Child Care (FCC) homes. Manage all Warriors in Transition child care issues.

Outreach Services

Coordinate and provide education and training on services, provide Community Outreach Services and Referrals based on the needs of member and perform referral services (EFMP, Respite Care, other special needs, etc.).

Military Personnel Services (HR)

Provides supportive actions concerning Retirement, Transition Management, Military Benefits, and Review of Records. Provide ID Card and CAC Card for Warriors in Transition.

Social Services Assistance

Provides comprehensive prevention education, intervention, information and referral assistance for social services (substance abuse, suicide prevention, stress and anger management, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Survivor Outreach Services

The official Army program designed to provide long term support to surviving Families of Fallen Soldiers. We are here for you. Army National Guard, US Army Reserves, and Active Component Families are served by the closest Survivor Outreach Services office.

Army Continuing Education System (ACES)

Provide education counseling services, Basic Skills Improvement, testing services when available (CLEP, DANTES and AFCT), VA Education Benefits counseling, evaluation of military experience for college credit, and GoArmyEd portal procedures for Army Tuition Assistance.

Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRE)

Provides counseling to service members and Veterans and their eligible dependents on Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation services to include interest and, aptitude and ability testing for suitable employment goal and labor market research. Also provides information regarding Chapter 30, Montgomery GI Bill and Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill and other chapters as well as education grants and community services.

Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS)

Provides a full range of services concerning Military Pay, Travel Pay Issues, and Family Member Travel actions.

Texas Veterans Commission (TVC)

Texas Veterans Commission (TVC): Provides one-on-one personalized employment services, including targeted job information, career counseling, and case management specific to individual needs, job referrals and job placement.

Soldier For Life (Formerly ACAP)

Provides mandatory pre-separation counseling, assists in completing pre-separation counseling checklist, and provide one on one transition and employment counseling.

Social Security Administration (SSA)

Provides one-on-one personalized service through video delivery system (VSD) in the preparation of documention for active duty Soldiers to file for disability benefits as a result of a physical and/or mental disability.

Inter-Net Cafe

Operation Comfort in conjunction with Cisco Systems and Time Warner provide free long distance telephone service and computer access for Warriors and Family members.

Military & Family Life Counselor

Provides pyscho-education to help Service Members and their Families understand the impact of stress, deployments, family reunions following deployments and stresses of military life.

Childcare Facility

The SFAC Short Term Alternative Care (STACC) facility can accommodate up to 25 children for childcare from 0800 - 1430, Monday through Friday (excluding Federal holidays). Children must be appropriately registered with the SFAC Child and Youth School Services Liason and be properly immunized.
Education & Employment Initiative/Operation Warfighter (E2I/OWF)

Counsels service members and their spouses on education and employment opportunities nationwide, assists in developing career choices, and matches the client with suitable education and/or employment opportunities. OWF organizes and provides federal internship opportunities, oversees participation in federal internships, and manages agency and command relationships. Develops career readiness and assists in designing a clear pathway to placement.

Financial Services

Provide Prevention and Education Classes, Credit Management, Budget Development, Consumer Information and Awareness, Financial Counseling and Assistance, Emergency financial assistance in the form of a loan or grant, and monetary assistance for undergraduate education of dependent children.

PEER Support Coordinator (PSC)

Provides assistance in convening PEER (Personalized Engagement Experiences and Resources) forums, assists in conducting outreach activities for caregivers, assists in locating and providing information on garegiver support services, identies and reports gaps in support, and acts as the Military Caregiver Peer Forum POC for the region.
Navy Wounded Warrior: Safe Harbor

Provide non-medical services to castrophically ill and injured Navy and Coastguardsmen.
